POM COONG HAMLET COMMUNITY - BASED TOURISM
It is considered one of the tourist attractions of Mai Chau, Pom Coong village; this is a meaningful and unique name, the word ''Pom'' in Thai means hill and ''Coong'' means drum. Putting the two words Pom and Coong together means that the village has hills located in a large drum, which is easier to understand than just vast fields. Currently, Pom Coong village has more than 300 people with nearly 70 households in 7 large families living together happily.
You can visit Pom Coong village in any year's season because you can always feel the peace from the majestic mountains and forests, the long green country roads, and the children playing on the rice fields. The terrain structure here is quite special when the mountains and hills are interspersed with the plains, creating a beautiful picture of nature in the early morning.
When the fog gradually dissipates, the village appears with its peaceful beauty, the sound of children eager to go to school, women carrying a Gui (a bamboo item such as a basket worn on the back to store things) over their shoulders to start daily works, ... At night, the village suddenly became unusually bustling, the sound of the festival drums, the merry gong and the clear singing of the people were raised from the lovely stilt houses.
Pom Coong village is always beautiful, but perhaps the most wonderful is at dawn and dusk. The moment the sun wakes up brings golden rays, shining through the hills, the immense rice fields behind the house. When the sun goes down, the sky is suddenly calm, and the air is strangely fresh; the gentle blowing makes us love this place more.
At this time, visitors can spend time walking in the village, taking some photos and enjoying the quiet life in a highland village, separate from the city.
According to the story, the people of Pom Coong village-built stilt houses bearing the identity of the people here to stay and serve tourism.
The houses are close to each other and separated by vegetable beds or thin fences. Unlike the stilt houses of other ethnic groups, the stilt houses of the Thai people are usually about 2m higher. It is designed with strong wooden pillars, so they always create a feeling of safety, cleanliness and coolness. The floors of ethnic people are usually made of materials such as bamboo or Dendrocalamus. The roof is covered with rattan leaves or is improved with bricks. The windows in the house are quite large to catch the cool breeze and are also a place for homeowners to hang orchids, wild sunflowers and very chill bird cages.
Mai Chau is beautiful every season. Visitors will have unique and new experiences when traveling to Mai Chau anytime. At the end of May, when students have just had summertime, Mai Chau enters the year's first harvest. The farmer is busy harvesting the golden rice in the field; the smell of smoke and ripe rice fills Mai Chau. At the end of October, the ripe rice fields' bright yellow color makes travelers unforgettable.
Visitors to the village are mainly foreigners, so they want to explore and stick to "eat together - sleep together - work together". Therefore, homestays organize activities such as visitors going to the fields, planting rice with relatives, helping poor households repair houses, building toilets, and cycling around the village to discover the beauty of this place. In addition, travelers can cook by themselves ethnic dishes such as Lam rice (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), vegetables, chicken, ...; it is the closeness and attachment that has attracted a large number of tourists to our village.
Ethnic Thai girls on the loom below the stilt house make unique brocade products that attract tourists to visit and see their works.
Visitors can buy souvenirs such as brocade fabrics, bags, and colorful shirts and get more exciting information about the stilt houses in Pom Coong village.
When visiting Pom Coong village, visitors not only enjoy the peaceful natural scenery but also immerse themselves in the ethnic minorities' unique culture, such as Xoe dances, Gong Festivals, sleeping on stilt, and drinking Can wine, etc. When night falls, the sound of musical instruments emerges - a sign of the beginning of a festival and local people in the village dance together with visitors to take part in the stall and Xoe dances.
